That said, I still had to fix glitches that made it favor certain moves for stupid reasons. Still, when I turned on the "survival of the fittest" test and made them fight for ELO against a series of identical opponents, the "good" AI eventually buried the previous, stupider versions at the bottom of the leaderboard. I wanted to expand the AI to assess the entire battle instead of just focusing on the opponent's active pokemon, but other projects distracted me before I got there.
It could also switch out if it determined another Pokemon's chances were better enough to warrant taking the extra hit. Cause Swords Dance + Mega Punch has slightly better odds than Mega Punch + Mega Punch. It could tell when it was worth going for a status move vs using that turn to attack. It could also tell which attacking moves would do more damage based on type, stats, and whatever other effects were active. It could tell when a move was pointless (Dream Eater on a pokemon that's not asleep, Swords Dance when your attack is maxed, etc). I never quite got it where I wanted it to be, but one AI I made definitely whooped all the others.
